* As featured on Japan Times: "Living in Japan: Theres an app for that"

No need to have any knowledge of Japanese to use it.

Can analyze several words at a time.

It recognizes over 3000 (most frequent 95%) Japanese characters. Dictionary contains around 200000 common word entries and 700000 Japanese Proper Names.

Can be used as input method or to make flash cards.

DISCLAIMER

* As of December 1, 2011 the Google Translate option will no longer give translations. This is due to a decision by Goggle to completely shut off the free translation service to all third party applications on that date.

* If the live camera mode is hard to use, the refresh rate can be set to "none". Tapping on screen gives instant translation.

* On devices without a camera it can only look up album photos.

* This app is over 30 MB in size. iTunes or Wifi download is recommended.

* Works best with clear images and good contrast, black text on white background and regular printed characters.

Pros and cons of Japan Goggles app for iPhone and iPad

Japan Goggles app good for

Really works on catching up the Kanjis just from the camera. That is the fastest way to get the reading. You got also to work with a dictionary some time to get the full understanding with the export feature.
Interesting and good. Generally nicely done. A hard task to do, so Im ok with inaccuracies. I wish there was also a photo history so I could confirm a translation with a friend. Also wish the history was organized with date markers. Keep up the good work!
Dont know what people are complaining about. Designing an application like this is incredibly difficult, and sure it may have a few quirks here and there but overall, it just works. Only thing I would change would be the ability to manually choose among certain characters that look similar but the app isnt quite getting. Overall solid work. Wouldve paid for it.
Would be nice if it also had a dictionary of common phrases (instead of only handling words), but you can definitely figure out important signs and warnings without too much effort.
こんなアプリを待っていました。 作ってくれた人ありがとう! Thank you so much for such a usefull app. I was really waiting for such a wonderfull app. I can use it very good though it maybe has little problem but never mind. That is really revolution. Thanks in advanced.
Very nice ..free and usable application. I t recognize well ..

Some bad moments

The softwares functionality is rather disappointing when trying it on real stuff like mangas. Character OCR for Kanji should be possible and I really hope that lucsens is able to produce something that is able to match the levels that Pleco (a Chinese dictionary) is capable of. Therefore I know it is possible to do better than this. Currently I consider Japan Goggles Beta Quality Software and hope that they are able to improve it.
Dont buy this version! It recognizes about 1% of the characters, when it does anything at all. This app should be removed from the store until its fixed. I wasted my money--dont waste yours.
Total waste of money. Didnt recognize any characters. I cant even see the resemblance with the suggested characters. Not even the right radicals. I really regret this purchase.
Im glad I got this on clearance, its a waste of money. It barely identifies 1 character, and none of the ones that it recognizes are complex enough to justify using this app. The only character it recognized was 木 when the character was actually 本. Even worse, it didnt offer 本 as an alternative. In my opinion, tree is not an acceptable translation for book.
Used to work great on my 5 but ever since the iOS updates and my 6 this program works only 15% of the time. Most of the time it locks up When it does work it works but leaves a lot of interpretation up to you. Too bad it cant be paired with the far better translation apps and just act as an ocr for those
... But you could probably learn Japanese in the time it takes for it to accurately recognize anything, anywhere, no matter how its written or framed.
